Incumbent Genevieve Samlal running for Senate

Eli Ridder | Report

Genevieve Samlal, a third year Justice Studies student, is running to keep her seat representing the University of Guelph-Humber on the main Guelph campus Senate — one of four — an announcement made earlier this week but found Friday evening.

“A vote for me, is a vote for you,” Samlal says in her slogan, asking students to let her “previous Senate experience work for you” — and her posters appeared on the walls near elevators at the end of the week.

Samlal released several platform items on Saturday, including exploring options for adding additional program-specific facilities on campus, reducing course repetition, printing benefits and improving the physical coursework drop-box located in the Learning Commons.

An Instagram account dedicated to her campaign first posted on Wednesday, but it was not discovered by The Avro Post elections unit until Friday evening.

Samlal joins newcomers Danya Elsayed and Nora Elgharbawy in their races, and a fourth candidate is apparently still incoming. Samlal has previously ignored inquires sent to the general email address for senators

This means that there will be at least four candidates and all four seats will be filled this year. Last September there was a by-election because during the previous spring only three senators ran for three seats.
